The surface compositions of C 3S samples, which had been hydrated in NaOH solution or pure water for 1min to 10min, were studied by ESCA(electron spectroscopy for chemical analysis). The corresponding liquid phases of early hydrated C 3S were studied by IPE(inductively plasma emission). The results were considerable different from previous results concerning the mechanism of the early hydration of C 3S. n (Ca)/ n (Si) on early hydratied C 3S surface are higher than 3, and those in NaOH solution are n (Ca+Na)/ n (Si)>3. This result is considered by the authors that it should be related to electrical double layer forming on the solid-liquid interface, and also related to Ca 2+ brought out by capillary water while dehydrating in vacuum. if CSH is studied by ESCA, then calcium-rich layer must be removed beforehand.
